December 4, 2001

General

Generally, Scouts are not permitted to use electronic devices of any kind on troop activities. Scouts are encouraged to use travel time for personal or troop betterment such as to discuss the current activity, read a book or view the scenery. However, while being transported to and from certain activities or events, and only as specified herein, Scouts will be allowed to use personal electronic devices under the direction of the adult leader in charge of that activity.

Permitted Activities

  1. Scouts are permitted to use personal electronic devices only on out of town scout activities that require a travel time of four hours or more. Determination of the travel time will be made in advance of the trip by the adult leader in charge of the activity.
  2. The permission slip for a particular event or activity signed by the parent or guardian will have a notation as to whether or not the activity (trip) is greater than four hours and, therefore, will permit the use of personal electronic devices.
  3. All personal electronic devises may only be used within the confines of the transport vehicle, usually an automobile. The electronic devices shall never be taken out of the vehicle.

Permitted Electronic Devices

  1. When permitted in accordance with the guidelines stated above, electronic devices that may be used are CD players, gameboys, etc. In other words, those items which provide personal entertainment.
  2. Any such electronic devise used by Scouts must be operated in the silent mode or with an earplug so as not to distract the driver or other Scouts.
  3. Under no circumstances are Scouts permitted to bring communication equipment on an activity or event including but not limited to cellular telephones, pagers, two way radios, etc. Scouts may use the cellular phones of the adult leaders on the way home from an activity to advise a parent of the approximate arrival time for pick up or in other circumstances when specific permission is given by the adult leader(s).

Troop Two Way Radios (Walkie-Talkies)

Troop two way radios are to be used solely by the adult leaders participating in an activity for the purpose of communicating with other vehicles traveling together. They shall not be used outside the vehicle, unless specifically directed by the adult leader in charge of the activity, and then only by other adult leaders.
